An examination of factors that impact end user acceptance of speech recognition technology in electronic meetings.

This dissertation will focus on the effect of speech recognition (SR) on the anonymity component of group support systems (GSS), comment generation and quality, end-user satisfaction with the GSS process, and satisfaction with the final decision outcome. A complete test of a SR GSS system was conducted to determine the impact of SR on GSS applications and its effect on end user acceptance of SR Technology.; In this dissertation study, a speech interface was added to an existing group support system and an experiment was conducted to determine differences between a speech recognition electronic meeting and a keyboard electronic meeting. Subjects were selected from Business and Liberal Arts classes and placed into random groups within each school affiliation. All subjects were provided training on either a speech or keyboard interface as well as receiving training on the electronic meeting program. Once the training session was completed, each group of seven students was given a task of having to provide the facilitator with a single recommendation for the format of their final exam. Prior to meeting as a group, each individual ranked their personal preference of the eight offered alternatives. Once the 15-minute meeting was completed, each group provided the facilitator with their recommendation and then proceeded to complete a post-session questionnaire. Finally the responses and group performance results from both voice and keyboard sessions were compared against each other.; Overall, the SR GSS program failed to perform better than the keyboard GSS in most of the hypothesis testing situations, although the differences were not that large. There were also some instances where speech recognition performed better than keyboard groups. Some specific examples include comment quality and accuracy. This results produced by this dissertation helps to provide evidence that speech recognition is coming closer to becoming a viable alternative input device. Another interesting conclusion that can be drawn from this dissertation is the impact between speech recognition and user satisfaction with final group decision outcome. The results of this dissertation provide evidence that when individuals utilize SR input they become more engaged and involved in the decision making process. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
