This research develops an explanatory model depicting the relationships between business size, industry sector, and organizational structure change through the evolution of employers and establishments over time. The role of Information Technology (IT) as an initial moderating variable is analyzed. A secondary purpose is to demonstrate use of available data from unemployment insurance forms filed with state governments as a fundamental data source for IT research.; The research focuses upon the hypotheses that: (1) IT-related businesses change in size over time more quickly than organizations in other industry sectors. (2) Small IT-related businesses tend to become larger while large IT-related businesses tend to become smaller over time. (3) The magnitude of these effects is different if the business is considered at the establishment level than if it is considered at the employer level.
