Articulation theory and disciplinary change: Unpacking the Bayesian-frequentist paradigm conflict in statistical science.

摘要

Since 1950 there has been a public conflict within the field of statistical science between advocates of Bayesian statistical methods and frequentist statistical methods, the paradigm that has been dominant throughout this century. This dissertation examines the Bayesian challenge to the frequentist paradigm utilizing Thomas Kuhn's model of scientific revolutions and articulation theory (which is drawn from cultural studies). Many theories suggest that challenges to the foundations of academic and professional disciplines are fiercely resisted so that disciplinary identity can be maintained. This dissertation looks for an explanation of how radical change occurs in the face of fierce resistance.
