摘要

This dissertation provides a survey of the independent business activities engaged in by slaves of the Neo-Babylonian period with particular attention given to three cuneiform business archives, one of which appears in an original edited edition. A careful contextual study of the activities of these slaves and a consideration of the legal (and to a lesser extent the socioeconomic) issues which arise from their "owning" property---the peculium---raises two main questions: What was the extent of a slave's peculium-based activity; and how far can we be sure that those individuals described as "slaves" were, in fact, chattel slaves? It will become clear that while Neo-Babylonian slaves did enjoy the use of a peculium, previous studies of this issue have not always carefully delineated its existence, either by assuming that all business-related activity engaged in by slaves was by means of their peculium, or by assuming that all agents designated as "slaves" were in fact chattel slaves.
