Word order and rhetorical organization in Qazaq.

The difference between languages regarding rhetorical organization has long been noted. It has been asserted that a language's word order (i.e., VO or OV) affects the ordering of propositions from clause to text in Papuan SOV languages.;Qazaq, a Turkic language, is examined to determine whether its SOV word order influences the organization of rhetorical relations in texts. The methods of analysis employed are Macrostructure Analysis (van Dijk 1980), Schema (Hoey 1983 and Longacre 1992), Rhetorical Structure Analysis (Mann & Thompson 1987, 1988, and Mann, Matthiessen and Thompson 1992).;The data examined are two hortatory texts written by Abai Qunanbaev (1845--1904), the father of Modern Qazaq literature.;While Qazaq does indeed tend to use a "quasi inductive approach" in expository and hortatory writing (Hinds 1990), the ordering of rhetorical relations correlates with pragmatic function, not word order. In Qazaq, satellite-nucleus orderings of rhetorical relations correlate with word order only at the interclause level.
