An investigation of the relationship between parent religious commitment, adolescent religious commitment, and parent-adolescent communication in the context of Korean immigrant families.

The purpose of the dissertation was to investigate the relationship between parent religious commitment, adolescent religious commitment, and parent-adolescent communication in Korean churches in the San Francisco Bay area, California.;Information was solicited using the Age Universal Intrinsic/Extrinsic Scale, the Parent Adolescent Communication Scale (PACS), and a Demographic Questionnaire. Survey packets containing these three items were distributed to 1005 parents and adolescents in San Francisco, Bay area, of which 399 responded.;The first hypothesis was that a statistically significant relationship exists between parent religious commitment and adolescent religious commitment. The results of the analysis indicated that no significant correlation existed. The second hypothesis was that a statistically significant relationship exists between parents' perception regarding the adolescents and adolescents' perception regarding the parents. The results indicated that the adolescents' and parents' perceptions of openness and problems in communication revealed relatively significant differences. The third hypothesis was that a statistically significant relationship exists between adolescent communication regarding their parents and adolescent religious commitment. A significant correlation was obtained between adolescents' religious commitment and adolescents' perception regarding communication with the parents. The fourth hypothesis was that a statistically significant relationship exists between the language barrier and parent-adolescent communication. A significant correlation was found between the language barrier and adolescents' perceptions of parents with regard to openness and problems in communication.
