Modeling leachate production in heterogeneous municipal solid waste landfills.

As a result of the heterogeneous nature of municipal solid wastes, leachate production usually occurs at moisture content below field capacity of the refine. Thus, leachate production is usually greater, and occurs earlier than that predicted using flow models. This is due to the heterogeneous nature of municipal solid waste. The heterogeneity of waste generally causes variation in the hydraulic conductivity and field capacity, which results in regions of less resistance to flow. The accurate prediction of the onset, peak and average leachate flow rates are important parameters for the design of landfill leachate collection systems and landfill bottom liners. Existing leachate prediction models usually over- or under-estimate these parameters.; A mechanistic model was developed to simulate leachate generation quantity in municipal solid waste landfills. The model is based on the hydraulic process and the heterogeneous characteristics of solid waste.; Calibration and verification of the model were conducted by comparing simulated results to several experimental data and to the HELP and PREFLO models for both pilot-scale and laboratory scale columns.
