摘要

This dissertation addresses the problem of the figure of the poet in La Araucana by Alonso de Ercilla. It explores the way in which the internal structure of the poem places the poet at the center of the epic, establishing him as its sole hero. It also analyzes the main plot as the poet's search for the poem itself, and the dialogue this process establishes with the Western epic tradition about the relationship between epic poetry, imperial politics, universal history, and the fate of man.; Chapter one analyzes the two plots that give structural unity to the entire poem: one consisting of "Illiadic" battles between Spaniards and Araucan Indians; the other consisting of the "Oddyssean" voyage of the poet through Chilean lands. Chapter two argues that the poet uses the characteristics he shares with other epic heroes in order to distance himself from the latter. Chapter three explores Ercilla's departure from his predecessors in the ways he represents the relationship between gender roles and heroic values. The last chapter links the poet's central role to his questioning of and disenchantment with the imperial project of world conquest.
