Factors that influence dialysis patients to exhibit compliant or noncompliant behaviors toward phosphorus control.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors that influenced dialysis patients to exhibit compliant and noncompliant behaviors toward phosphorus control regimens. Data were obtained from two focus groups and a questionnaire administered to 81 hemodialysis patients in Florida. Serum phosphorus concentrations were recorded as an objective measure. Questionnaire data were analyzed using Chi Square. The majority of the subjects thought they were in compliance, but only 12 were compliant by objective measures. Significant factors that influenced compliance were employment, length of time as dialysis patients, dialysis time, and belief that phosphorus control was very important. Although there was wide variation in responses, knowledge and use of high phosphorus foods, phosphate binders, and laboratory data were not significantly different between the compliant and noncompliant groups. However, focus group participants mentioned these items as being important for compliance. Additional investigations are needed to define and clarify the complexity of phosphorus control.
