The mean velocity has always been a very important factor in open channel hydraulics. However, the maximum velocity has never been formally studied. The measurement of the mean velocity is important because it is needed in estimating the river discharge. This thesis presents a simple method to estimate the mean velocity, which is quicker and more efficient than existing methods.; This thesis consists of two parts: The first part is the development of a new equation that relates the location of maximum velocity to the entropy parameter in Chiu's velocity distribution equation. Better understanding of velocity distribution can ease the measurement of discharge. The second part is practical applications of the new equation. One application is to help recognize a velocity distribution pattern from a set of velocity samples; and the other application is to simplify discharge measurements.
