This dissertation presents QoS(Quality of Service) provisioning in integrated service networks from network design and management perspectives. The main features of this work are summarized below. (1) A systematic procedure for full bandwidth allocation is proposed using a linear system with constraints applied to the design and management of networks with various configurations. A full bandwidth allocation is required for networks such as backbone networks or WANs(Wide Area Networks). With this procedure, simultaneous bandwidth allocation can be made for all bandwidth requests from source and destination pairs. (2) Given the bandwidth allocation, the performance of the network is analyzed by modeling the traffic source using the Markov Modulated Fluid Model, and a set of differential equations are derived to describe the equilibrium buffer distribution. The performance analyses of individual flows are presented with the numerical results. (3) To provide QoS in a shared link, a new link sharing scheme, called the CARA scheme is proposed. By decoupling the runtime rate and the worst case rate for a flow, the CARA scheme provides differentiated services according to traffic constraints, while guaranteeing the worst case QoS.
