This dissertation reports on the preliminary experiments showing proof of principle, the design and optimization of a miniature cylindrical ion trap operated at the nominal frequency of 1.048 MHz using software and hardware configurations designed to operate at that frequency. Consequently, mass calibrations, as well as, specialized ion manipulations were performed and reported. Results show a verified mass range of 186 m/z using hexafluorobenzene and 254 m/z using bromoform. Selective isolation of ions was successfully performed by increasing the amplitude of the rf used for storing ions. The resonance frequency of ions was determined for the first time in a miniature cylindrical ion trap. These resonance frequencies were then used for tandem mass spectrometry experiments performed on acetophenone. CID voltage and delay times were optimized for MS/MS experiments on the 120 m/z ion of acetophenone.
