摘要

This dissertation is an empirical study about change in post-industrial American society. Specifically, the study demonstrates the impact of globalization and the accompanying deindustrialization on the lives of American workers with respect to changes in the labor market and individual and institutional responses to these changes. Faced with downward mobility in the case of the professional-managerial class, decreased chances for upward mobility in the case of the working-class, and increasing job insecurity for both classes, workers must be provided with some type of incentive or motivation for the smooth continuance of participation in the labor market. One potentially fruitful site for studying adjustment to change in the labor market is retraining programs.
