In this dissertation, approaches to enhance coexistence between IEEE 802.11b based WLAN and Bluetooth based WPAN for site specific design space are presented. Coexistence becomes a significant problem for users when users are using different services in close proximity. There are many factors that cause performance degradation. Frequency coincidence, time coincidence, and the relative power level are an important factors need to be considered. A number of approaches have attempted to reduce the mutual interference between Bluetooth and IEEE 802.11b. However, the lack of systematic approaches and analysis methodologies for site specific design space may cause end users get only partial benefits from both IEEE 802.11b and Bluetooth. In this dissertation, systematic approaches that allow users to get full benefits of both technologies, without changing any protocols.; Based on general models, two extended site specific models for IEEE 802.11b on Bluetooth and Bluetooth on IEEE 802.11b are derived. Two optimization procedures are presented based on the understanding of coexistence and site specific extended models. Throughout the analytical examples, the advantages of using the objective function are illustrated. The results show that the formulated objective functions are very efficient when interference is non-uniformly distributed in design space. Finally, the efficiency of transmission power control is investigated based on the site specific network performance evaluation procedure.
