Application of project management techniques in the development of a new product.

The techniques of project management are well established and practiced frequently in large construction projects. However, its application in New Product Development is limited. This study applied the techniques to the development of a realistic new product, “Oil View” and evaluated the results. Its function was to monitor and report the quality of oil for engine systems. When installed, the equipment provided information that could be used to perform preventive maintenance functions. The product evolved as a joint venture between Companies A and B. Although the project was in accordance with schedule, budget and performance specifications, it was considered a failure since it did not generate any profit. The study concludes that the application of these techniques alone does not guarantee success, nor does their absence, a failure—they provide guidelines for planning and managing projects. The actual success or failure depends on factors that are beyond the scope of project management.
