Image processing has a vast range of applications in almost every area of science and technology including medicine, agriculture, industry, and law enforcement. In this work, an image and video processing platform (IVPP) based on an Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) System-on-a-Chip (SoC) design is developed. The IVPP allows custom image-processing blocks to be plugged-in to the platform architecture in order to realize and test complex algorithms implemented in hardware for real-time image and video processing applications. Xilinx's Embedded Development Kit (EDK) has been used to model the IVPP as a "hardware platform." The hardware platform description is captured in the Microprocessor Hardware Specification (MHS) file generated by the EDK's Xilinx Platform Studio (XPS). The MHS has been exported to the Software Development Kit (SDK) which is part of the Xilinx EDK. The IVPP platform is a stand-alone server, and relies on data sent from a remote system. A console application running on a host system functions as a user-interface to the IVPP. The application is hosted on an HP Proliant DL380G5 server. The application allows the user to choose stored image data to be sent and processed. Also, the user can retrieve the processed image data from the IVPP using the application.
