Transformational leadership attributes as perceived by team members of knowledge networks.

Knowledge and learning have become the new strategic imperative of organizations. Corporations began using technologies GroupWare (technology designed to facilitate the work of groups), knowledge management databases (electronic storage of information) and Intranet technologies in the early 1990's to help facilitate the creation, integration and dissemination of knowledge within Knowledge Networks. As a result, many organizations have adopted the “Knowledge Network” model of operation. There is a great deal of literature on effective leadership characteristics in Knowledge Networks. This study contributes to the small but growing body of research investigating the phenomenon of the leader's role in Knowledge Networks.; A survey of Knowledge Network members was used to obtain their perceptions of actual leader behaviors versus those of an ideal leader. Findings suggested that although members of Knowledge Networks primarily communicate through electronic means such as email and databases, they believe trustworthiness and integrity are the most important leadership traits. The survey results show that leaders must also be sensitive to differences in gender and age with respect to an individual's perceptions of the leader's actual and ideal behaviors. For example, the survey results show that leaders must be aware that females believe that their actual leaders make difficult decisions when required. They also are convinced that their actual leader's decisions are based on moral and ethical principles.
