Conventional public transit, as an alternative mode of travel, has been criticised because it is not reliable, flexible or accessible enough to attract choice riders to transit or respond to the requests of transit users. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), an emerging transportation concept that ties the speed and reliability of a rail service with the lower cost and more flexible nature of a fixed-route bus service aims to improve the deficiencies associated with conventional services and better respond to the needs of the travelling public.; Specific goals of a BRT system are to establish ridership demand, improve service quality compared to conventional transit and attract choice riders. Two types of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes implemented in Greater Vancouver: the 99-B-Line which operates in mixed traffic and the 98-B-Line which operates in mixed traffic and an exclusive median busway, for a portion of its route, are examined to determine if BRT is a viable intermediate capacity transit (ICTS) option and is better able to meet the needs of transit customers.
