For decades sliding mode control receives wide attention for its capabilities of robustness, complexity reduction and its effectiveness to cope with various nonlinear control problems. One of the key elements of this methodology is the switching surface design which makes reduced order system fulfils certain performance indices. On this topic there have already existed many well-developed techniques but many of them are hindered either by high dimension of systems, requirement of full state parameters or measurements for controller implementation. In this proposal, a concept “Order of Zero Dynamics” is introduced to truncate the control design effort. Even more, system states or parameters required for controller implementation might also be reduced depending on the nature of the system. Design methodology for both linear and nonlinear autonomous systems were both investigated. To demonstrate the capability of proposed methodology, NOx control design for Diesel engines equipped with Variable Geometry Turbocharged (VGT) and Emission Gas Recirculation devices was considered. Automotive Air Conditioner Temperature Control Design was selected as an additional interesting example to further illustrate the design concept.
