Improving lint yield in cotton Gossypium hirsutum L., is important for both breeders and producers. Very few studies have been conducted that identify within-boll yield components affecting lint yield per unit land area. The objective of this study was to evaluate within-boll yield components for eight cotton cultivars. Cultivars (Deltapine 50, Deltapine 90, Fibermax 963, Fibermax 975, Fibermax 989, Paymaster 1560, Sure-Grow 501, and Stoneville 474) were grown and evaluated in 2000 at Mississippi State, MS. Within-boll yield components of boll weight, lint percent, seed/boll, seed surface area, fibers/seed, lint cotton/seed, fibers/seed surface area, and lint cotton/seed surface area, were determined. Variation among cultivars was identified. Results suggest that lint yield could not be attributed to only one trait among these cultivars. Yield might be increased by crosses among these cultivars that show variability for within-boll traits.
