A variety of fasteners have been developed for use in the construction of ready-to-assemble (RTA) furniture. Despite their widespread use, information is lacking concerning mechanical performance of these fasteners. This information is essential for the rational design of RTA furniture. Performance of mechanical fasteners for RTA furniture was evaluated. Both particleboard and medium density fiberboard (MDF) were utilized to construct joint specimens with four types of mechanical fasteners that are specifically designed for RTA furniture. Traditional wooden dowels were also included in the study. Joint specimens were tested in compression to compare and evaluate the strength and stiffness of mechanical fasteners and dowels. Results indicated that most of the mechanical fasteners have not the strength and stiffness properties of glued-dowels. Material and fastener types have significant effects on the stiffness and strength of the joints. Long-term performance of the joints was also evaluated. It was shown that long-term rotations were doubled indicating major stiffness reduction of the fasteners tested. A finite element model was developed to predict the short and long-term behavior of the joints. The model was verified by experimental results. The results of this study may help furniture designers and manufacturers in the design phase of RTA furniture to choose suitable type of fasteners to meet expected service requirements or conditions.
