Antibacterial cellulosic fabrics are developed by grafting antimicrobial N-Halamine compounds onto the materials. Fabrics were first treated with antibacterial precursors, 1 or 3-monohydroxymethyl-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (MDMH) or/and 1,3-dihydroxymethyl-5,5-dimethylhydantoin (DMDMH), then the bonded hydantoin rings were converted to halamine structures by immersing fabrics into a chlorine bleach solution. Treated fabrics demonstrated rapid biocidal efficacy and kept their inactivation capacity after multiple home launderings. Modified materials are able to inactivate a wide variety of bacterial, fungal and viral organisms rapidly. These fabrics are suitable clothing materials for medical-use and other bio-protective purposes. Physical, chemical and biological methods were employed to characterize the structures and performance of the materials, and the mechanical properties of the materials were studied as well.
