The failed courtship: The Chinese Communist Party-United States relationship, 1936--1949.

The Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) foreign policy from the mid-1930s to the late 1940s was, on the whole, favorable towards the US. Because of the events that have occurred since the People's Republic of China was declared, it is often assumed that CCP foreign policy was always doctrinaire. This was not the case. Pragmatism was a key element in the CCP's diplomatic philosophy. While recognizing differences in ideology, the Communists continually sought US support, cooperation, and recognition. Despite setbacks along the way, the Communists were optimistic about establishing relations with the US, made continuous overtures and left room for negotiations despite a lack of positive results. The Failed Courtship examines the CCP openness towards the US and how it used propaganda as its main tool to achieve its foreign policy objectives. Reasons why the CCP did not achieve its foreign policy objectives are also explored.
