A taxonomic revision of Anthurium section Semaeophyllum (Araceae).

The genus Anthurium (Araceae) comprises over 1000 Neotropical species. Different sections or groups of species have been distinguished within the genus based on morphological features. Section Semaeophyllium is one of the most easily recognizable groups, characterized by species with trilobed leaves. It ranges from Central America (Nicaragua to Panama) to South America (Colombia and Venezuela to Ecuador and Peru).; A brief morphological revision of Anthurium species with lobed leaves was completed in 1978 and since that time there has been no further investigation of these species. In this revision of Anthurium section Semaeophyllium there is a total of 24 species, 8 of them new to science. Standardized species descriptions are presented for each taxa as well as an updated description of the section. Patterns of morphological variation within and among species are explained in detail, and distribution maps are given. An identification key to all species, mostly based on vegetative characters, is also provided.
