Effects of LSVTRTM on production scaling, perceived effort, and playback perception in a person with Parkinson disease.

The speech of persons with Parkinson disease (PD) is most often characterized by reduced loudness and especially their ability to scale loudness output. The Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT®) addresses this speech deficit and purports to teach patients to rescale the magnitude of their speech motor output through a mechanism called “recalibration.” The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of LSVT® on scaling loudness production, perceived effort and playback perception in one person with PD. After LSVT® training, the participant demonstrated that overall loudness and perceived effort had increased but a change in his ability to scale loudness and effort was not noted. The findings indicate that PD effects the internal monitoring of speech. And, attention to external cues (e.g., LSVT®) does not affect the ability to scale production output.
