The influence of the feminist movement in /on the history of psychology.

The research questions that have guided my inquiry have been the following: What role has the feminist movement played in the history of psychology in North America since 1960? In what ways has the history of psychology remained immune to changes advocated for by the feminist movement? In what ways has the history of psychology responded to the feminist movement? What historical contributions have feminists made in psychology? How can their experiences serve as a model for future generations of feminists in psychology?;I have studied the historical development of a feminist consciousness in the lives of seven women psychologists, as well as in the discipline of psychology. Understanding the emergence of a feminist consciousness for seven prominent figures in psychology's history, as well as tracing the growing feminist awareness in the discipline of psychology as a whole, contributes to the creation of a contextualized social and intellectual history of North American psychology since the second wave of the feminist movement in the 1960s. I have analysed the ways gender, women and feminism have been understood in the history of psychology, in the psychology of women and/or feminist psychology, and in epistemology. Additionally, I have worked with feminists from psychology's past to remember the neglected contributions of those women who have been marginalized in psychology, at various historical junctures.;The first Chapter begins with an analysis of the academic field of women's history, followed by the field of the history of psychology. The study of women's involvement in the history of psychology is then described, in addition to the emerging field of a feminist history of psychology. The second Chapter presents a historical overview of women in psychology and feminist psychology in the United States and Canada in the twentieth century. Chapter three considers theories of knowledge that have emerged in response to feminist critiques of epistemology in the history and philosophy of science and psychology. The expansion of traditional conceptions of science, history, objectivity, subjectivity and individuality is presented as holding some promise for the development of a feminist history of psychology. In the fourth Chapter the methodology of the study is articulated. In Chapter five, results of the research are presented in the form of case studies on the lived experiences of seven academic feminists who reflect on their involvement in psychology's feminist history and propose avenues toward the development of a history of psychology that is grounded in feminist principles. The sixth Chapter presents the results of a cross-case analysis. The themes that cut across the participants' interviews are woven into a collective case study of feminist change in psychology. Chapter seven reflects on what can be learned from the stories of the individual participants, as well as their collective story, to identify features that would be important to integrate into a feminist history of psychology.
