A nutrition needs assessment: The dietary practices, nutrition knowledge, and perceived body image of collegiate female athletes and non-athletes.

The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate and contrast the dietary practices, nutrition knowledge, and perceived body image of female collegiate athletes and non-athletes, in order to assess the need for nutrition education among the two groups. Each participant completed a nutrition screening questionnaire. The body composition of all participants (n = 40 athletes and n = 40 non-athletes) was determined by hydrostatic weighing. Subjects' actual body composition was compared to their perceived body composition. Data were analyzed using SAS statistical analysis software. The results indicate athletes practice better dietary habits when compared to non-athletes. However, non-athletes demonstrated a greater level of nutrition knowledge, and appeared to express a better degree of body satisfaction than the athletes. Both groups of women had some misconceptions regarding the role of nutrition on physical performance, suggesting there is a need for nutrition education among female college students, both athletes and non-athletes.
