Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and genetic counseling.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) have been shown to have a genetic component however it is unclear whether parents of these children are aware of this information. Genetic counselors are in an ideal position to provide parents with information regarding the genetics of autism. This study aimed to determine whether parents are being given information on the genetics of ASDs, whether they received adequate information after their child's diagnosis and their familiarity with and interest in genetic counseling for autism. Only 40% of parents reported being given information on the genetics of ASDs. Fifty percent of parents reported not having received adequate information after their child's diagnosis and 70% of parents reported that they are interested in seeing a genetic counselor. In conclusion, parents are not being given necessary information regarding the genetics of ASDs and referrals to genetic counselors for ASDs should be promoted.
