摘要

The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of nutrition education emphasizing calcium on bone mineral density and content in whole body, and trochanter area, in fourth and fifth graders. Participants were volunteers from two elementary schools in Denton. Schools were randomly assigned as intervention (Woodrow Wilson) and control (Borman). A dual-energy X-ray absorptiometer evaluated bone mineral measurements, and food frequency questionnaire evaluated daily intake at three points of time, 0, 8, and 20 months. Results showed no significant increase in calcium intake in all participants regardless of the group; mean yogurt intake increased in the intervention group; the mean intake in the intervention and control group of ice cream, milk combined with cereals, milk, and orange juice, decreased. There was a significant increase in total body bone mineral density, total body bone mineral content, and trochanter bone mineral density and content regardless of the group.
