Moisture sensitivity of styrenic nylon blends.

This study focused on the moisture sensitivity of nylon blends. It is known that the properties of nylon materials decrease in performance due to moisture absorption. ABS, GPPS, and PP were melt blended with PA 6 in a variety of formulations and molded into test specimens using a reciprocating screw injection-molding machine. “Dry-as-molded” (DAM) and wet (immersed in water for 72 hours) specimens of each blend composition were tested. Properties including tensile modulus, tensile strength, strain at break, Rockwell hardness, and apparent bending modulus were investigated. Furthermore, the elastic moduli of the blends were obtained using a dynamic mechanical rheological test (DMRT).; The DAM and wet specimens were compared and it was found out that the moisture sensitivity could be reduced with adding blend constituents. The moisture sensitivity can be improved further by incorporating additional amounts of the blend constituent. Semicrystalline PP reduced the moisture sensitivity the most, followed by GPPS. ABS, which absorbs relatively small amounts of water itself, reduced the moisture sensitivity only slightly.
