Medical nutrition therapy and hyperlipidemia.

This retrospective study examined if medical nutrition therapy (MNT) was effective treating patients with hyperlipidia. The American Dietetic Association (1996) provided the conceptual framework. The western New York (WNY) Dietetic Association developed the data collection form. Data were collected from a WNY cardiac rehabilitation center (CRC). Subjects (n = 36) attended the CRC from November 2001 to April 2002. Ages ranged from 41 to 81. Data collected were: cholesterol (total, HDL, and LDL), triglycerides, body mass index (BMI), and blood pressure. A CRC questionnaire measured well-being. A paired t-test was used to analyze data. Significant changes were found in total cholesterol (p = .0003), LDL cholesterol (p = .0003), and well-being (p = .0051).
