The United States Environmental Protection Agency has instituted storm water benchmark monitoring for numerous classes of industries that may negatively impact surface water by discharging storm water with high concentrations of pollutants into surface waters. Stemco LP is a industrial facility in Longview, Texas that manufacturers seals for the wheel end of heavy duty trucks and trailers and has consistently exceeded its benchmark limit for zinc. Through measurements of Zn dry and wet deposition, Zn released from building roof and walls and Zn in the storm water discharge, this study has identified the building roof as the most significant contributor of Zn in the storm water discharge. Significantly, the storm water monitoring found that vehicle traffic through the outfall drainage area during storm water runoff, could load the storm water with levels of Zn that were greater than the benchmark limit and the first flush discharge.
