Tannins are natural plant products that have the potential to regulation fat cell metabolism, similar to leptin, an adipogenic hormone that stimulates lipolysis in the adipocyte. Therefore, it's hypothesized that plant tannins influence metabolic components such as leptin. Subcutaneous fat was collected from castrated-goats (Immature vs. Mature) for cell culture. Approximately 3 x105 cells were cultured with/without hydrolysable (HT) or condensed tannin (CT; 0, 1 microg, 10 microg, 100 microg and 1 microg) for 2 h (acute) or 18 h (chronic). Upon termination of cell culture, media was collected for glycerol concentration and cells were harvested for leptin mRNA. Leptin mRNA increased (P<0.04) by dose/treatment regards to age. Secreted glycerol was increased (P<0.006) by dose/ treatment/time. Hence, tannin appeared to influence adipocyte metabolic components possibly, through leptin.
