Sustainable engineering is the implementation of engineering technologies to minimize the environmental impacts of a process while maintaining its economic status. It is a vital issue in today's world for long term environmental as well as economic progress of human society.; To assess the sustainable engineering, many methods have been employed such as Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Total Cost Assessment, Sustainability Index Metrics etc. In this thesis, a set of new sustainability indices has been developed to assess the sustainability of an industrial system based on emergy analysis. The advantage of emergy analysis is that it can quantify the value of mass and energy resources, services and financial costs on a common ground. These indices are perfectly suitable for depicting the complete picture of sustainable development in an industrial world.; Industrial ecosystem is one of the promising options available today to achieve environmental progress without compromising the economic profile of the industries. The collaboration among the member entities of an industrial ecosystem is very important for the survival of such a system. However, individual interests and possible conflicts as well as varying uncertainties are the potential threats for the survival of an industrial ecosystem. In this thesis, the issues of individual interests, possible conflicts, and the effects of uncertainties have been analyzed through the application of game theory. Such analyses are vital for the successful design and operation of industrial ecosystems.
