Kenaf production has its greatest potential on soils that are prone to nematode infestations. This study was initiated to screen and breed kenaf for root knot nematode race 3 resistance. Screening was conducted on available germplasm using infested field soil in greenhouse, actual field planting, and by inoculating plants with approximately 5,000 eggs per plant. Results showed there was a high variability for resistance due to segregation within germplasm lines. Reports of resistance cited in literature often were not correct. SF 459, reported as being tolerant, is also the cultivar recommended for planting on root knot nematode infested soil. However, based on testing, SF 459, on infested soils is unwise. The greatest potential for exploiting root knot resistance seems to come from a single selection and its progeny. Results of these germplasm were not different from the resistant check for all tests in which they were included.
