Syntheses of dendrimers as optical storage media.

The zeroth- to the fifth-generation Frechet-type porphyrin dendrimers with ester linkages have been successfully prepared. They are characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, IR, MALDI-TOF Mass, GPC, TGA and DSC methods. They show many unique properties. A new Frechet-type nitrile-terminated hydroquinone dendrimers have also been synthesized. They have also been successfully reduced to the amine-terminated dendrimers using BH₃ in THF as reducing agent. However, the poor solubility of the higher generation dendrimers limited the applications. Two new methodologies in preparation of dendrimers have been developed using mellitic acid and hexakis(bromomethyl)benzene as building blocks.
