An evaluation of the effects of laundering, drying, starching, and pressing on the durability and appearance retention of the Saudi Arabian ghutra.

This study examined the durability and appearance retention of three name brand Saudi Arabian ghutras. Each sample was compared with the control and with each other. A total of 15 convenience samples from the three name brand Saudi Arabian ghutras (composed of 100% cotton voile woven fabric) were subjected to five sets of preparatory procedures: machine and hand laundering, drying, starching, and pressing. Subsequently, the following tests were conducted: (a) breaking force and abrasion resistance to measure durability; and (b) dimensional change, wrinkle recovery, and whiteness to measure appearance retention. A quantitative experimental study design was used.; Results on durability indicated that there were significant differences among the three brands, hand-washed specimens were stronger than machine-washed specimens, laundering sequences significantly affected breaking force, and brand one was the strongest. Appearance retention results indicated that the experimental samples were slightly whiter and better in appearance than the control samples.
