Turkey's cyprus dilemma from the perspective of international relations theories.

What are the reasons that make Cyprus a national policy for Turkey? How likely is it for Turkey to give up on the island? What is it that makes it so attractive for the relevant stakeholders, and who are they? Why is it one of the world's longest outstanding unresolved international problems? Can the Cyprus problem be better understood by systematically utilizing international relations theories?;The present study seeks to elucidate the abovementioned queries by relying on the premises of neorealism and neoliberalism, while analyzing the roots of the problem by tracing its history. It is argued that the two theories complement each other, and are very instrumental in elucidating the relevant parties' policy decisions although neoliberalism seems to be theoretically more capable of dealing with the complexity of the international system framing the Cyprus conflict, considering that it involves multiple stakeholders with conflicting interests in the region.;Moreover, in light of the aforementioned investigation, I argue that Turkey's Cyprus policy contains additional nationalist overtones beyond the scope of neorealism and neoliberalism. Therefore, this study also attempts to identify the causes behind the Cyprus conflict becoming a national policy for Turkey, and seeks to explore the desired criteria leading to a potential resolution of the issue by analyzing the reasons that complicate the present dilemma on the island.
