Water Security: Concepts, Challenges, and the South Saskatchewan River Basin.

Water is fundamental for life, and this thesis explores this resource in the context of security, stakeholders, and strategy. This is achieved by understanding the complexity and value of water, and then exploring its place in the security dialogue. Water is inextricably linked to all human enterprise and is. integral to the natural environment, upon which all life depends.;The South Saskatchewan River Basin in Alberta is a particular example that demonstrates what an emergent matter of water security is, and how it differs from traditional notions of security, threats, and responses. Federal and Provincial responses to water security are identified and explored, and specific attention is paid to the Alberta strategy for water resources. "Water for Life: Alberta's Strategy for Sustainability" is unique, and represents a concrete commitment to water security for the province, the South Saskatchewan River Basin, and the stakeholders that depend on this tremendously valuable resource.
