Treading lightly on the environment: Using Second World War fabric saving and clothing reuse techniques to inform contemporary women's clothing design.
The purpose of this study was to explore ways of reducing consumption in the apparel industry by documenting and analysing fabric saving and clothing reuse techniques from the WWII period and to document the social, cultural and political conditions that contributed to people supporting waste reduction. These findings were used as inspiration for designing a line of contemporary, environmental businesswomen's clothing from recycled materials. Reusing secondhand materials decreases clothing waste, may lead to a decrease in apparel production and that in turn, contributes to resource conservation. Data were collected through in-depth open-ended interviews with WWII war brides and businesswomen along with textual research on primary and secondary literature. A Human Ecological Apparel Design framework was adapted as a part of this study. Education on sustainable apparel consumption is critical. There is a potential market for unique women's classic, long lasting business wear made from recycled clothing.
