Five Steps in the Ocean (Original composition, Quintet).

This masters thesis is a musical composition of approximately fourteen minutes' duration. It is scored for the following instruments: flute (doubling alto flute), clarinet (doubling bass clarinet), violin, violoncello, and percussion (five-octave marimba, bass drum, tam-tam, vibraphone, and crotales). In addition to the usual mallets, the percussionist will need brushes and a rubber ball for the bass drum and a bow for the crotales.; The work is in five movements, each movement inspired by the characteristics of a different ocean: Atlantic (stormy), Arctic (still and quiet), Pacific (majestic), Antarctic (isolated, but animated) and Indian (tropical). The work as a whole contains elements of sonata form. The outer movements (both allegro) form an exposition and recapitulation, while the inner movements represent a development of themes from the exposition. The second and third movements are slow and lyric, while the fourth movement suggests a scherzo.
