Factors affecting physicians' attitudes about the medical information system usage and acceptance through the mandated implementation of integrated medical information system at the Saudi Arabia National Guard Health System: A modified technology acceptance model.

“If you build it they will come” is the general attitude of many medical and non-medical health administrators in regard to physicians' attitudes about the actual usage of medical information systems (MIS). But how can we achieve confidence that “they will come”, i.e., physicians will have positive attitudes about the use of MIS, while health administrators have primarily focused on the technological advances and changes? Healthcare administrators must deal not only with the technical issues but also must deal with the human and organizational factors that influence physicians' attitudes and acceptance of MIS. Thus, it is important to understand factors that affect physicians' attitudes and acceptance of MIS in order to eliminate barriers that interfere with acceptance and actual use of MIS.; The purpose of this study has been to assess factors that influence physicians' attitudes about MIS usage and acceptance. A survey methodology has been used to investigate a proposed model of physicians' attitudes about the use of MIS. The survey instrument was adapted from previous technology acceptance studies and other organizational research.; A path analysis technique has been used to analyze the results of the study and to address the research questions. The results of this study validate the physicians' acceptance model according to most of the indices of goodness-of-fit. The findings of this study also clearly identify that organizational support, professional values, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness are keys to successful physicians' acceptance and use of MIS.; The study could provide healthcare professionals with guidelines for management changes and successful implementation of MIS. It also can be used to assess not only the acceptance of MIS by physicians but also by key non-physician groups, e.g., nursing, etc. within the Saudi Arabia National Guard Health System (SANGHA).
