Development of a framework for computer assisted assessment systems used in oral English proficiency testing of international teaching assistants.

This dissertation describes the framework for a computer assisted assessment (CAA) system entitled Test Management and Administration Package (TESTMAP). This framework provides a systematic method for adapting practices in the field of software design for developing CAA systems. TESTMAP uses the n-tier architecture that separates data, application logic, and user interface into three independent layers. The data layer is composed of a relational database management system called SQL Server 2000, while the presentation and application logic components are designed used Active Server Pages (ASP).NET as the programming model.; Given the growing need for screening the English language ability of international students at American universities, the technology framework developed in this dissertation can help alleviate some of the resource pressures that traditional testing systems have placed on oral English programs that provide university-wide language screening services. The automation and streamlining of day-to-day testing activities such as test scheduling, examinee management, and score reporting frees up a significant amount of staff time that can be focused on construct validity related issues.
