This thesis consisted of three parts: determination of changes in absolute permeability of sand due to shear deformation, mapping of propagation of fractured/dilated zone in sand under fluid injection, and determination of geomechanical responses of shale due to shear deformation. Triaxial tests were performed to determine the changes in permeability of sand due to shear deformation. The experimental design consisted of a modified triaxial apparatus with an inductance-capacitance-resistance (LCR) meter for electrical resistivity measurement. In a series of tests, the boundary and loading conditions were varied to cover a wide range of changes in permeability. The test results illustrated the relationship between the shear dilation and permeability of sand samples. Injection tests were performed to investigate the propagation of fractured/dilated zone in sand under fluid injection. The experimental design consisted of a rectangular fracture box with three inflatable heavy-duty plastic bladders. The bladders were housed on the inner walls of the box to allow a true triaxial compression condition on the sand samples. Fluids with low and high viscosity were injected into the samples.
