An analysis of international graduate students' TOEFL scores, GPA, and perceptions of English language difficulties.

摘要

This study examined issues related to international graduate students' perceptions of their English language difficulties, academic performance measured by GPA, and TOEFL scores. The data were collected through an online survey and analyzed through descriptive statistics in order to identify patterns of agreement and disagreement among the group of 464 SIUC international graduate students. According to correlation analysis, TOEFL scores were not found to be an accurate and effective predictor of academic performance as measured by GPA; however, the students viewed TOEFL scores as a reliable predictor of their academic performance. The study also revealed that international graduate students encountered several English language difficulties, especially in writing. Directions for further research were discussed, and the findings were interpreted in view of their implications for future international graduate admissions.
