Tungsten Trioxide (WO3) is a very well known transition metal oxide (TMO) exhibiting electrochromic (EC) coloration which is located conveniently in the solar spectral region. This reversible coloration can be induced in a convenient form by the fabrication of thin film based EC devices and through the application of a small electric field. Hence, the WO3 based EC devices have a high application potential in improved energy management area. Lot of research is presently devoted to the improvement of the efficiency and duration of WO3 based EC devices.;The aim of the present work is to examine the suitability of the flash evaporation technique in the preparation of nanostructured thin films of WO 3 and its composite thin films with Vanadium pentoxide (V2O 5). The structural, optical and electrochromic properties of WO 3 films and WO3-V2O5 nanocomposite thin films prepared by the flash evaporation technique have been studied. The electrochromic properties are examined using a convenient dry lithiation method developed in the laboratory. The effect of the addition of a small percentage of V2O5 to the WO3 thin films on their structural, optical and electrochromic properties has been examined. The results are compared to the thin films prepared by the traditional thermal evaporation method. Some EC device fabrication has also been carried out using these films deposited on Indium Tin Oxide (ITO) coated glass in conjunction with V2O5 thin films.
