Luminance patterns in buildings: Meaning and design.

The process of interior lighting design rests currently on two fundamental principles; the design of an installation to provide an appropriate horizontal illuminance for the task and the control of direct and reflected glare. However, this process does not take into account the more subjective and qualitative attributes of a lighting design. Research interests in the lighting community have focused anew in two areas; luminance patterns in interiors and ii) luminance magnitude and luminance edge detection in visual fields. As a contribution to this debate, a series of experiments have been carried out at the Bartlett School of Graduate Studies in a full scale experimental space which has the facility to provide different lighting installations. Analysis of the results of these experiments has been chiefly by means of correlation and factor analysis techniques. Indications have clearly emerged of appropriate luminance parameters that predict subjective response. These parameters are incorporated into a series of guidelines which may be used with confidence in the initial stages of lighting design.
