Federated distributed database is a collection of interconnected databases. Different kinds of data models exist from diverse databases in the federation which makes it difficult to interoperate with each other. These data models are constructed according to the local needs of the individual organizations participating in the federation and their associated user communities. These local databases may be running on different hardware and/or different operating systems' platforms, and as such, it is very difficult to establish data interoperability among them.; This project concentrates on using the Unified Modeling Language (UML) approach to model a prototype of data interoperability among many heterogeneous local database sites that are participating in a federation of databases. This prototype will model a system that allows client/server relationships between distributed objects. In this system, server objects provide services that can be invoked. To obtain this interoperability concept, the schemas of Relational Database (RDB) and Object-Oriented Database (OODB) will be used to establish data sharing and update with earth science data. This approach will be achieved by developing General Metadata Bridge (GMB) which is an interoperability software broker designed by using UML. The GMB will be able to resolve conflicts between the database systems which make it difficult for them to interoperate. Hence, the system creates an environment that enables the participants in the federation to interoperate with each other without having to know what hardware, software, operating system platform, or what communications protocol that are required.; Assessment performance test will be established to determine the throughput and response time of the system developed in this project. Recall and precision concepts will also be used to know the relevance of the results of the information retrieved during the testing of the system.
