This dissertation examines the influence of Virgil's Georgics in early modern prose and poetry. It specifically focuses on the first English translations of the Georgics and their influence on other genres such as the country house poem, promotional literature for Britain's colonial ventures, and sermons justifying the conquest and colonization of the New World. It seeks to explore how early modern readers and writers understood Virgil and how such understandings influenced the recycling and reinterpretation of Virgil in early modern English literature.
