Ontology and (non)-ontology: Deleuze, Heidegger and the being of the question.

This thesis explores the role of questioning and difference in the metaphysics of Gilles Deleuze, as articulated in his major work, Difference and Repetition. These themes are considered in the context of Heidegger's question of being, and its correspondence to the ontological difference---a correspondence regarded as "fundamental" by Deleuze. This thesis argues that Deleuze follows a Heideggerian inspiration concerning the role of questioning, but only insofar as the question, and correspondingly difference, is no longer placed in service of being, which continues to dominate modern ontology. Through a methodical exegesis of Difference and Repetition , this thesis shows how Deleuze draws on the idea of expression, developed through his studies of Duns Scotus, Spinoza, and Nietzsche, to effectuate a "reversal of ontology" whereby difference distinguishes itself unilaterally from being.
